Minister of Home Affairs Dr Siyabonga Cwele, visited residents of Bloemside to handout identity documents today. The minister emphasised that it was important that citizens fetch their booklets or smart cards so that they can have easy access to other services.
Dr Cwele stated that IDs give access to grants for those who are in need. “These documents are critical as they give you access to services. Our call is that all our offices including this one in Bloemfontein and all over the country will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 so that we can assist our citizens to collect their IDs. Those who have lost their IDs may apply for a temporary identification document and those who will be getting one for the first time can apply,” he said.
The event combined all three spheres of government with Mangaung Metro Municipality setting up tents for residents to make applications. Legislature Speaker Mamiki Qabathe, Executive Mayor Olly Mlamleli, and Council Speaker Mxolisi Siyonzana in attendance.
The minister handed out ID booklets to a number of community members who were at the event. Mlamleli stated that people who do not fetch documents put themselves at risk of identity fraud. “This book is very important,” she said as she held up a booklet. “You have to take care of this book because if you do not there are people who will use it to their advantage,” Mlamleli explained.
Minister Cwele is also set to hold a rally at Clive Solomon Stadium in Heidedal later today. – Nomaqhawe Mtebele
