FS police ask information about deceased, illegal miner

The Free State police are appealing to the community to assist in identifying the body of an illegal miner that was found dead at Harmony’s Eland mine shaft in Welkom.

According to police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, relatives or anyone who might have knowledge of a man who went underground, should visit the Welkom Government Mortuary.

“A deceased, illegal miner was found at a mine. The body was brought to the surface and it was taken to the mortuary. The deceased had a name tag and a name of Elias with a cellphone number. Nobody could be traced and thus the deceased is still unknown. The relatives of the deceased could not be traced during our preliminary investigation,” says Thakeng.
