With the help of a photographer who specializes in photoshoots for preterm babies, Leana Bosch, the Free State Department of Health celebrated all premature babies at the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein with a special photoshoot.
The provincial department embarked on the project to celebrate all preterm babies as well as their parents. According to departmental spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, recent statistics reveal that 150 000 of the 1 million babies born in South Africa each year are born prematurely.
“Tomorrow is World Prematurity Day and we as the department will be going to one of our communities in Bloemfontein to celebrate awareness on preterm, what it is, the complications that may result from it as well as the possible preventative measures,” Mvambi said.
He said this information will be provided to members of the public also in an effort to prove that preterm babies can live to be healthy adults, like Olympian Wayde van Niekerk, who was also born at only 29 weeks. As part of the celebrations, the department will embark on a health walk and awareness raising campaign at the Lemo Mall in Bloemfontein from 07:30.
The walk will be from Lemo Mall to Pelonomi Hospital. Those interested in participating are encouraged to wear purple, which has been chosen as a symbol for World Prematurity Day.
