Premier of Free State MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae held a feast for the survivors of gender-based violence on international women’s day (08/03), at the Bloemfontein City Hall.
Mathae said women must not remain in abusive relationships despite the fondness they may be receiving from their partners, and that often times financial circumstances push most women to find themselves in abusive relationships. “The minute he starts raising a hand to you, pack your bags and leave. Many women are currently lying six feet under because they kept saying their partners would change”, she said.
The premier guaranteed women that government has programs that allow them to be financially empowered, to avoid being dependent on their partners, which may lead to them remaining in a routine of abuse.
She added, “We should be captains of our own destinies, therefore my message to you today is to take advantage of the opportunities that this government, your government, has made available for you. This is your government doing what it has promised, and we are asking you to join us on this journey.”
Women were encouraged to be in charge of the financial state of their townships.
