The Free State MEC of police, roads and transport, Butana Kompela, has requested pastors to visit 24 schools tomorrow and encourage learners not to be involved in gangsterism.
The department will hold a crime prevention event at Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo. Spokesperson of the department, Zolile Walaza, says the Imbizo is a build-up towards the launch of the provincial crime prevention strategy after the crime prevention summit that was launched in March at Bloemfontein.
“We want to organise people to take responsibility towards preventing crime. We also hope to discourage the learners who get involved in gangs and if we have reached these points, then we shall have achieved the purpose of the event,” he says.
Walaza says Kompela will ask communities to participate in crime prevention initiatives. He continues saying that Botshabelo is a massive township with a variety of complex crime related problems.
“To the residents of Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu and including all of the Free State, this war against gangsterism, domestic violence, alcohol and drugs abuse is something that every single person should be involved in. If not, our communities are going to degenerate,” says Walaza.
