Earlier in April, the Heidedal community gathered in large numbers for a prayer and community meeting following the stabbing of a young man in the area.
The gathering brought together residents and key stakeholders to address growing fears around crime and to encourage unity in finding solutions to ongoing violence and suspected gang-related activity. Many residents expressed concern about safety in the area, and the impact crime is having on daily life.
The meeting also emphasised the importance of community involvement in addressing these challenges, with several speakers urging residents to work together and support local crime prevention initiatives. In response to these concerns, MP Saintes van Wyk submitted a formal query at the national level. “A detailed parliamentary question has been submitted to the Minister of Police, requesting accountability measures within the South African Police Service, particularly focusing on oversight at provincial, cluster, and station command levels. In addition, the question seeks clarity on targeted interventions to address escalating gang violence in highrisk areas such as Heidedal,” the letter read.
Responding to the concerns raised, Free State police spokesperson Thabo Covane explained that there hasn’t been an increase in crime in Heidedal. “In accordance with the reported crime and incidents to the SAPS in Heidedal, no abnormal or more than the usual gang activities are reported in Heidedal,” he said. He also added that the gangs are operating in multiple communities, where, in some cases, they have support from community members. “It is observed that these gangs are being supported by a portion of the community.
However, the broader community is reporting and raising their concerns about the gang activities,” he said. Covane added that over a twomonth period, there were murder cases reported in Heidedal that were not gang-related. He explained “all suspects were arrested and linked to the murders. Two suspects had previous affiliation to gangs; however, the crimes were not gang-related, nor did the suspects act as part of gangs.”
He stressed effectively addressing crime requires strong collaboration between police, community members, and ward councillors. “The Heidedal neighbourhood is working closely with the SAPS by informing the police immediately if serious incidents occur.”
