CUT Ixias secure home final in the Varsity Shield

MORGAN PIEK

Bloemfontein – The Central University of Technology Ixias have secured their fourth consecutive home final in the Varsity Shield by beating the University of Fort Hare in Alice last night.

The men from Bloemfontein won the hard fought match 28-18 after leading 10-0 at half-time in the wet conditions.

All four the other teams in the competition have a mathematical chance of making it to the final at CUT Park on 31 March.

In the Varsity Cup, the Shimlas’ chances of making the play-offs took a devastating blow after losing 25-5 to the University of Cape Town Ikeys at the Green Mile in Cape Town.

The side from Cape Town have hardly been noticed this season and have quietly slipped into the second spot on the log.

Meanwhile, the University of North West Pukke beat Wits 16-8 at the Fanie du Toit Sports grounds in Potchefstroom to open a four point lead at the top of the log.

The men from Potch need to beat UJ next Monday to secure a home-final with UCT breathing down their necks.
