The Free State stalwart has been named as the new captain of the national women’s netball team. Chawane takes over the leadership role of the world’s fifth-ranked team after the recent announcement that the legendary Bongiwe Msomi retired from the sport as a player after many years at the helm.
Chawane wasn’t a part of the success when the Free State Crinums team won the prestigious Telkom Netball League for a fourth time earlier in the year as she was busy plying her trade abroad for the Cardiff Dragons in Wales.
Chawane has represented the University of the Free State Kovsies in the Varsity Netball and the Crinums in the TNL with aplomb over the years.
The 28-year-old Chawane, who originally hails from Tzaneen in Limpopo, represented South Africa at the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England, as well as during the 2023 Netball World Cup which was staged in Cape Town.
She takes over the leadership role after having played in more than 80 Tests for South Africa and she said for her it’s all about leading by example – both on and off the netball court.
“I am truly humbled and honoured to be appointed captain of the Proteas,” said Chawane.
“It’s a privilege to lead such a talented and dedicated group of players. I’m excited to take on this new challenge and work with the coaches and teammates to achieve our goals.
“I’m committed to leading by example, with passion, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I’m looking forward to this new chapter and making South Africa proud.”
Chawane’s first assignment as the Proteas captain will be during the SPAR Netball Challenge in October, against fellow African giants such as Malawi and Uganda. Netball South Africa will confirm the opponents, fixtures and venues in due course. – MORGAN PIEK
