Bloemfontein Courant previously made a call to the community to assist a local who needed a wheelchair to aid with his mobility.
In true Bloemfontein spirit, he has received two electric wheelchairs with the help of the community and Grace in Action who facilitated the hand-over.
Gustave van der Merwe was involved in an accident just over a month after his engagement to his wife Sanmari on 10 June 2008. She is elated and looking forward to have the first dance with the love of her life, as the chair will lift him to be in a standing position – the first time in 16 years.
“It is amazing to think that people still care. From a medical perspective, it will help with the wounds and maybe we can learn how to dance,” she proclaimed.
Gustave and his parents were overjoyed as they watched the wheelchair company set up his wheelchairs in their yard. Speaking on this life-changing occasion, Gustave mentioned that he is grateful for Grace in Action and the broader community for everything they have done to assist.
“It is going to make an impact in my life and change everything from now on. Thank you very much,” he expressed.
His parents, Gustave and Lidia, and his sister Helena van de Wall, are just as grateful for the wheelchairs, and look forward to seeing how his life improves from here on.
