Centenarian celebrates with family, community

Efstratios Tyrannis, affectionately known as Stratos, recently celebrated his 100th birthday in Bloemfontein, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on 10 February 1924 in Megalohori, Greece, Tyrannis’ journey from his village to a century of life has been remarkable.

The key to longevity for Tyrannis is God’s will. “No special recipe, just good health,” he said. “I have always followed a Mediterranean diet – which was natural for me since I am a Greek.

Also, I eat small portions of food and never overindulge. No smoking, and not much alcohol. And I spend a lot of time outdoors, gardening, which is my favourite thing to do,” he added.

Reflecting on his life, Tyrannis cherishes memories of his youth, his wedding day, owning a tea room in Maitland Street with his brother, and having the opportunity to visit his homeland, Greece.

According to his daughter Desi McCarthy, the day began with a family gathering at his home, filled with balloons and gifts, followed by a surprise celebration at Pick n Pay Preller Walk, where he shops daily.

Efstratios Tyrannis walked in on a surprise celebration at Pick ‘n Pay Preller Walk.

“We heard that Pick n Pay was going to surprise him when he walked in. We all rushed over, to be there before he got there.

A guard of honour was made at the door, and as he arrived, everybody sang Happy Birthday to him, and the manager presented him with a gift,” she said.

She further said in the evening, the entire family, cousins and all, went out for dinner at The Blue Gem Restaurant.

“My dad loves being surrounded by as many family members as possible, so this was very special for him,” said McCarthy.

She added that the highlight of the evening came during the dinner when a party celebrating a 31st birthday, got wind of the 100-year celebrations, and the entire party came out and sang for her father.

“When he cut his cake, the owner of The Blue Gem – my father’s nephew Simon Tyrannis – played the Greek version of the Happy Birthday song for him,” said McCarthy.

“It is a wonderful feeling knowing our father has reached an age that not many others have been privileged enough to reach. The fact that he is in such good health makes this milestone even more momentous.”
