Casino career woman joins Goldfields

Originally from Port Elizabeth, career woman and mom of two, Odelia Sharp is relocating to take up the position of General Manager at Goldfields Casino in Welkom.

When Odelia reflects on her first job following her matriculation from Gelvandale Senior Secondary she had no idea that her decision would lead to the job of her dreams.

Odelia joined the gaming industry as a waitress and what began as just a job, soon developed into a passion to work in the gaming industry. The bright lights and dazzling ambiance appealed to Odelia. With her love of people and interactions with different personalities as her base, Odelia took the decision to train as a dealer – this proved to be the perfect career move.

Odelia can best be described as determined and ambitious effortlessly rising up the ranks from Tables Supervisor, Gaming Duty Manager, Training Manager, Deputy Gaming Manager and Tables Manager.

When asked what advice she would give to someone wanting to enter the hospitality or gaming industry, she says, “If this is the industry you choose then you are so lucky to be a part of it.  If you can’t imagine yourself doing anything else in the world then it’s quite a ride.”

Her position at Goldfields will largely be based on overseeing the entire operations ensuring that the property adheres to the standard practices of the industry.

“I am lucky to be joining a team of highly skilled individuals in their respective fields and together our goal is to take Goldfields Casino to greater heights while still ensuring that it remains a big role player in the community.” She adds, “I plan to support my team with their strategies for the rest of the year so we can collectively achieve our goals”.

Odelia enjoys spending time exploring the outdoors with her two boys, Cian (13) and Braedon (11).

“We are very excited about moving to Welkom. Every one that I have spoken to has said that it is an amazing place to raise a family and that it is a close knit community.”

“I plan to get to know the people, learn the culture and become acquainted with the people. I am looking forward to being part of the family and joining the community”, she continues.

Having just completed the Senior Management Development Programme through the University of Stellenbosch, Odelia is well prepared for the move.
