CampusKey fire started by candle

Earlier on Monday, 4 November 2025, a fire incident occurred at CampusKey Bloemfontein’s Groenewoud Block A.

The fire was caused by a lit candle which was left unattended by a student, inside one of the rooms. CampusKey’s management has confirmed that the fire was contained to just one room and that no fatalities were caused by the fire.

“We are pleased to report that the building has been declared safe. All students in Groenewoud Block A evacuated efficiently, and we appreciate their calmness and cooperation during the situation,” said the team.

The team further confirmed that there has already been made alternative accommodation arrangements for the affected student and that there will be provision to meet her immediate needs.

“While students are responsible for insuring their personal belongings, we are here to offer guidance as she evaluates her next steps.

At CampusKey, the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities and we are grateful that this incident was contained safely. Our team remains committed to ensuring the security and comfort of our student community,” concluded the team.

Braam van Zyl from the Mangaung Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that the fire department dispatched fire engines and was able to safely extinguish the fire.
