In the wake of panic due to the rising numbers of cholera cases in the Free State and the ongoing water crisis in the city, a small business called ‘Let’s Aqua’ launched in the centre of Bloemfontein to help communities with the ongoing water crisis.
According to Rachel Rapolaki, the co-founder and owner of Let’s Aqua PTY LTD, they initially launched on 30 April 2023 after realising that there is a huge water crisis in the Free State.
Their main focus with this project of bottling water is derived from the health and safety of our communities. “This concept of us bottling water came from realising that we have many households with children who attend schools and people who go to different work areas where bottled purified water is not available. We then saw the need to bottle water for our communities so they can avoid, by any means possible, drinking tap water because as we all know tap water has never really been declared safe for drinking,” said Rapolaki.
Rapolaki explained that they use a reverse osmosis plant that removes hard minerals from water.
“Reverse osmosis is capable of removing 99% of the dissolved salt, particles, organics, and pyrogens from the feed water and that just shows how good this purifying water system is.”
Given that they recently launched the company, they plan to venture into using sustainable materials in the future. “We are going to work together to make recycling easier by supporting infrastructure improvements and encouraging people to do what they can to tackle plastic pollution. We are committed to playing an active role in the development of the well-functioning collection, sorting, and recycling schemes across the towns where we will be operating,” said Rapolaki.
Though the need was there, Rapolaki explained that it was not easy to start up due to funds. “This business was funded by all the co-founders and owners from their own pockets, so we had to wait a little longer than the plan we initially had to start this business but we are grateful that the business is off the ground and hoping to open more stores around the Free State,” said Rapolaki.
