The Bloemfontein teacher from the Academy of Excellence, a private school in Heidedal, who is featured in a video that shows him manhandling a learner, has appeared briefly in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court.
This follows after he was arrested in connection with a common assault case opened by the parents of the Grade 7 learner.
The teacher was suspended days after a cellphone video started making the rounds on social media.
The video – which was filmed by a classmate – shows the teacher manhandling a Grade 7 learner in front of a packed classroom.
When contacted at first for comment, Chairperson of the School Board, Hansie Engelbrecht confirmed the video, but said he is not able to comment any further because of legal and procedural diligence. The case was postponed for further investigation.
Meanwhile the Free State Education department confirmed that the teacher resigned before he could face disciplinary processes by the school
