Bag Mania, located at Southern Centre in Fichardtpark, recently donated three Tosca trolley school bags to three Grade 1 learners from Jim Fouché Primary School as part of its commitment to giving back to the community.
According to Bag Mania CEO Rudi Vermeulen, serving the community has been part of the company’s vision since the day the store opened.
“The day we opened the doors of Bag Mania, we said we wanted to give back to the community.”
Vermeulen explained that the initiative was inspired by witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by some learners at the school.
“I have a daughter who is a Grade 7 pupil at Jim Fouchè Primary School and I saw the need in person,” he said.
The three learners who received the trolley bags were identified by teachers at the school.
“They are learners who have also deserved it through hard work and going the extra mile,” said Vermeulen.
The initiative was made possible through collaboration with other local businesses. Elegant Travel Goods assisted by supplying part of the bags, while Fantasea Promotions & Printing created custom-made name plates for each learner’s school bag.
He said it was heartbreaking to see children starting their school careers without proper school equipment.
“Each child deserves to have the proper equipment to make life easier on their school journey, working towards their future. They are only children, and we tend to forget that,” he said.
According to Vermeulen, the initiative reflects the store’s broader mission of supporting families during difficult economic times.
“We know the economy is tough, and not all parents/caretakers can afford a decent school bag to make the load a little lighter and give hope.”
He said providing learners with durable school bags can positively impact their confidence and motivation at school.
“Providing learners with sustainable products like a school bag, which is a necessity for a child, will motivate the children to do better in school. If we look at our children now, they will look after our city and country in the future,” he explained.
Members of the public are also invited to participate in future initiatives by nominating schools that may require support.
“We would like to invite members of Bloemfontein to visit our shop, at Southern Centre Fichardtpark, where we will have a box where the school’s name can be written on and thrown into the box for nomination.”
He emphasised their focus extends beyond profit-making and focuses on serving the community.
Vermeulen said the donation was not intended to be a once-off initiative, as Bag Mania hopes to continue supporting learners and community members in the future.
