Duane Petrus – Bloemfontein police are still trying to confirm whether or not the latest warning currently circulating on social media about child abduction is a hoax or not.
Free State police spokesperson, Chaka Marope, says they were yesterday alerted about a suspicious white kombi that was spotted around primary schools in the city.
The messages indicate that two males and a female drive around looking for potential victims.
Marope says there has, however, not been any formal complaint laid with the police yet.
He added that they have units that are currently on the look-out for the mentioned vehicle.
Furthermore, Marope says they also contacted the management of one of the schools mentioned in the messages, but they knew nothing about an attempted abduction.
He added that it might be a hoax, but they are not taking it lightly.
“We don’t want to take it lightly. We are following it up, because we do not want to relax and later hear that something serious had happened. But, there is no confirmation of such at this stage,” Marope says.
Plenty of similar messages have been circulating around the city in recent months, and while some turn out to be genuine incidents, some are not.
