ANC won twenty-six of the thirty-one municipal wards contested on Wednesday’s municipal by-elections around the country.
One by-election took place at Upington, Khai Gariep Municipality in the Northern Cape. The new ward councillor in Ward six is Willem Afrikaner of the ANC. According to Nokhaya Mjila, speaker of the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, Afrikaner will be inaugurated on 3 December. Mjila said they won with 1795 votes, Congress of the People got sixty-six votes and an independent team received 211 votes.
“The councillor of ward six where theby-elections took place passed away in October this year. As the ANC, we started our campaign with full confidence that the ANC will win the awards and we expected to receive seventy percent but the people have spoken and we managed to get eighty-five percent,” she said.
Meanwhile, ANC’s Matshidiso Mofokeng retained the seat in the Free State at Ward seven in Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality, Qwa-Qwa. In North West, ANC received twelve seats from the sixteen seats based at Ngaka Modiri Molema District Council, while one of each seat went to the African Independent Congress, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters and United Christian Democratic Party.
