Quality drinking water for consumption at various health facilities in the Free State is of great concern.
The Department of Health has discovered water tankers with good infrastructure at various health facilities.
Provincial spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi, says they are satisfied with how those water tankers are maintained. He says they have implemented procedures to ensure that water tankers are well maintained for storage.
The department has sent Water Geologists across the province to ensure that they identify alternative water sources, such as boreholes.
Mvambi mentions that at many clinics there are existing boreholes that haven’t been used.
“Our environmental health practitioners are consistently testing the water quality. We have not found any waterborne diseases to this extent, but we are taking precautionary measures to make sure that we don’t have an escalation of waterborne diseases. I met with the head of the environmental health practitioners and I implored upon him that we get regular reports from district managers and also the CEOs of our health facilities. Then we can alert the communities about this because they need to know ahead of time,” Mvambi explains.
