SABRINA DEAN AND CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER – The University of the Free State (UFS) has described the forthcoming departure of its Registrar Dr Derek Swemmer as a great loss.
UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader says Swemmer is one of the longest serving registrars in higher education, adding his contribution as Registrar and member of the UFS executive team has been substantial. She says the UFS and Swemmer have jointly determined to part ways amicably with effect from 30 November 2014.
"During November, Dr Swemmer will only perform selected important duties while the many activities in which he has been involved are finalised or handed on to personnel who will pursue these responsibilities," she says.
Swemmer’s imminent departure comes at the same time as the departure of his wife Driekie Hay-Swemmer, who was suspended earlier as Vice-Rector of the UFS and head of the institution’s South Campus. Her “amicable” departure as of 31 October 2014 was also announced last week.
