• 1904: Gideon Fagan, SA composer and director, is born in Somerset West.
• 1964: Brenda Fassie, SA ‘Pop Queen’, is born in the Langa township, Cape Town.
• 1988: The independent Afrikaans newspaper Vrye Weekblad, critical of government policy is published with Max du Preez as editor.
Sports:
• 1935: Kitei Son runs world record marathon (2:26:42).
• 1937: Maurice Archambaud bicycles world record for distance in one hour (45.796 km).
• 1963: Marilynn Smith wins LPGA Cavern City Golf Open.
• 1973: Arnold Taylor, SA bantamweight champion, wins the world champion title of the World Boxing Association (WBA).
