A dark cloud of smoke visible from the inner parts of Bloemfontein has had locals wondering what the cause could be.
“It was a very unfortunate incident, most likely caused by someone who wanted to burn grass, and not seeing what the implications could be. We had the whole town guessing… not that we wanted that.” This is according to Schoemanspark Speedway’s Michael Jones, after a fire broke out there last week.
Regardless of the major implications of the fire, the club has started preparations for the national championships, which will be held by Motorsport South Africa in September.
Competitors and spectators from across the country will attend the competition in the eastern part of the city.
Ground staff and management are working tirelessly to ensure that everything is in place by September. “The facility is actually in good condition. After the fire last week, we have a fence to rebuild, and bathrooms that need to be fixed after some vandalism took place.”
Michael is however positive the track will be ready for the national event.
Michael explains that the track was originally used for speedway bikes in the 70s, but was left neglected for decades until a local businessman paired up with oval enthusiasts to give Bloem adrenaline junkies and car lovers a place to call home.
Since then, it has been open for all to enjoy.
Bloemfontein Courant reported from the scene of the fire, after what was a small fire initially spread due to strong winds. Tyres that were used for fencing at the Speedway caught fire causing the dark cloud of smoke on the horizon.
Michael expressed his gratitude on behalf of the club to the Mangaung Fire Department, Transnet and each member of the public who assisted to quell the fire.
