Two policemen died in Deneysville when a truck crashed into them during a routine lockdown inspection. According to the Free State Department of Police Roads and Transport, the driver who collided into them is alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol when the incident happened.
Department spokesperson, Hillary Mophethe, explained that the collision took place on the R594 road on Friday.
“The two, a warrant officer and a sergeant, lost their lives on Friday night, 1 May 2020, while on duty on the R594 road. They were busy inspecting a truck under the Covid-19 regulations. It is alleged that a driver of a light delivery vehicle collided with both officers despite the fact that they were wearing reflector jackets to enhance their visibility. It is alleged that the reckless driver was under the influence of alcohol,” she said.
“We are deeply saddened about the tragic loss of our members’ lives whilst on duty. They served with dedication right until their untimely passing,” said MEC Sam Mashinini. “Our hearts are filled with grief and sorrow because we all have been robbed of these dedicated officers.”
Mashinini also applauded law enforcement officers and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who have been enforcing Covid-19 regulations since the beginning of lockdown. He urged all law enforcement officials to stay vigilant while on duty and to at all times act within the confines of the law.
