Traditional women were not allowed to own a house or voice out their opinions according to the rules of the traditional leadership.
The Free State Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC Olly Mlamleli encourage women traditional leaders to grab opportunities in skills developments. She says after celebrating women’s month last week with professional women, she realised traditional women should also be recognised.
Mlamleli was speaking at the traditional women celebrations in Qwaqwa on Tuesday. She says all kinds of women should be celebrated and embraced. “With those women, we are saying they are appreciated. Even if they previously lived under very difficult circumstances, they lived under an era where they were under pressure. The rules of traditional affairs where not empowering them,” she says.
