• 1916: Margaret Mary Smith, artist and ichthyologist, is born in Indwe, Eastern Cape. She illustrated the book of her husband, Prof. J.L.B. Smith, Sea fishes of Southern Africa, which is regarded as one of the most comprehensive books on fishes in the world.
• 1960: Longest speech in UN history (4 hrs, 29 mins, by Fidel Castro)
• 1984: Schools re-open, but 93,000 pupils continue to boycott classes.
• 2003: Two South Africans are appointed to a high-profile Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa (CHGA). The University of Natal’s Professor Alan Whiteside and World Bank managing official Dr Mamphele Ramphela are members of the 20-person commission.

• 1967: Dmitri Shostakovitch’s 2nd Violin concert premieres in Moscow.
• 1968: 1st broadcast of "Hawaii Five-O" on CBS-TV.
• 1992: Roseanne Barr Arnold gets a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Sports:
• 1976: Donna Caponi Young wins LPGA Carlton Golf.
• 1995: Earliest 1st-class cricket in Aust season (Qld v Western Prov).
• 1981: Serena Williams, Saginaw, Michigan, tennis player (13 grand slams) is born.
• 2004: In the Athens Paralympic Games Natalie du Toit wins her fifth gold medal, the 50m freestyle, in a world record 29.52sec, after having won gold in the 100 butterfly (1:07.69 world record), 100 freestyle (1:02.83 Paralympic record), 200 IM (2:29.98 world record) and the 400m freestyle (4:28.09 world record). She also won silver in the 100m backstrokes and claimed fourth in the 100 breaststrokes.
