Small municipalities hire unskilled people

REFILWE MEKOA

The problem with small municipalities is that they don’t hire rightfully skilled people.

This is according to the Free State Legislature’s Public Accounts Portfolio Committee Chairperson Neels van Rooyen. He said if small local municipalities hired skilful people, some of the challenges that they face will not surface. Three local municipalities, Mohokare, Kopanong and Xhariep District appeared in front of Van Rooyen’s portfolio’s committee meeting on Thursday in Bloemfontein.

He explained to Courant that Mohokare has improved managing its financial statements and have taken steps in disciplining their employees when found guilty of misconduct.

“Municipalities need to apply some consequence management on issues such as irregular fruitless unauthorized expenditure, so we asked them during the meeting if they have reported such incidents and what action were they taking to discipline the municipal officials. Mohokare confirmed that they have taken disciplinary action against their officials, which proves that they are on top of it,” he said.
