Free State Legislature’s Public Accounts Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Neels van Rooyen, said local municipalities will either receive less or no funding at all in the next financial year.
He added that local municipalities need to get their billing system right. Van Rooyen’s statement comes after three local municipalities, Mohokare, Kopanong and Xhariep District appeared in front of Van Rooyen’s portfolio’s committee meeting on Thursday in Bloemfontein.
He explained that it was time municipalities stopped wasting money on buying T-shirts, caps and bags. Van Rooyen said municipalities should start using money efficiently and avoid sinking deeper into debt.
“There is no extra money going to municipalities, if there is extra money it is going to be very little. Municipalities need to start looking at their own revenue and reduce their debtors. They need to start collecting money from those people who owe them for water and electricity,” he said.
