Sitting in parked cars an open invite for criminals, say police

SABRINA DEAN – Bloemfontein police are again urging people to refrain from sitting in parked cars at night as this leaves them sitting ducks for criminals.

Spokesperson Joy Xaba has sent out the appeal after another Bloemfontein couple was hijacked while sitting in a parked car, this time in Phahameng. According to Xaba, the male victim died after he was shot five times in the back, while his 25-year-old girlfriend was hospitalized after being shot in the leg. She has since been released from hospital.

Three unknown male suspects fled in the deceased man’s white VW Polo, registration number FCY912FS. Police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and hijacking.

The warning comes on the back of several similar incidents in Bloemfontein during the year. Xaba says the practice (of sitting in parked cars) creates an opportunity for criminals. "We know it’s festive season, it’s hot in the house so people opt to sit in the car but that is creating a big problem and we find people are being hijacked and killed," she says.

"I am pleading with the community they must be aware and they must please, please not stay in their cars," she says.
