Shimlas draw and a tough lesson for Ixias

MORGAN PIEK

Last years’ finalists, North West University Pukke returned to winning ways in the Varsity Cup by beating the NMMU Madibaz in their opening match.

The men from Potchefstroom, who are seen as the early favourites beat the side from Port Elizabeth 36-26 at home.

In Bloemfontein it was a tough baptism of fire for the CUT Ixias, after losing their first ever Cup match to the University of Johannesburg.

UJ taught Skillie Besters’ boys a rugby lesson with a 46-10 drubbing at CUT Park.

Across town, the Shimlas came from behind to play to a 29-29 all draw against the two-time champions, the University of Pretoria Tuks.

Man of the match, Gerhard Olivier who scored a try for Shimlas, told OFM Sport that they are happy with the result and they will take it one game at a time.

In the final game of the first round, the champions the UCT Ikeys and arch rivals, Maties played to a thrilling 32-32 draw the Green Mile in Cape Town.
