“Happy” the Tekkie Tax mascot is giving virtual hugs across the nation. The Tekkie Tax Virtual Hug Campaign, intends to help people connect with their loved ones despite the lockdown.
According to Tekkie Tax National Campaign Manager Germa Hattingh, the the current health crises has highlighted the power of kindness and the human spirit.
“The world is going through its biggest health crisis in 100 years and people are living with great uncertainty around the immediate future. Two things are being highlighted in this crisis: the human spirit will prevail and the deeper we move into these uncharted territories, the more kindness is shown between people from all around us,” she said.
Tekkie Tax helps about 250 charity organisations including homeless shelters, children’s and old age homes annually, many of whom would have to close their doors if they had to go who without this money.
“In times like these, we come to realise the desperation and plight of our fellow citizens. We also realise how much family and friends mean to us, especially when we can’t spend time with them. We want to turn to our loved ones, see their smiling faces and give them the one thing we cannot right now, a hug,” said Hattingh.

The annual Tekkie Tax Day will be on Friday 31 July 2020. Financial security has currently become a major worry for millions of people in South Africa, and throughout all of this, charities are hardest hit. Proceeds from Tekkie Tax Day will contribute to various organisations that care for the most vulnerable people in society.
