Saints win big against Saint Dunstan’s College

The Saint Andrew’s 1st XI and under-15 A cricket teams sent records tumbling over the weekend as they recorded massive, one-sided victories over the visiting Saint Dunstan’s College.

Both teams were confident of winning after claiming comfortable victories in their T20 clashes against the Benoni school on Friday. But few, if any, would have predicted the size of the wins in Saturday’s 50 overs a side clashes.

1st XI T20

On Friday, on Vossie’s Field, the 1st XI won at a canter in a very short game. Despite fast-bowling spearhead Gerald Coetzee being rested from bowling duties, Saints restricted Saint Dunstan’s to just 84 for 5 in their 20 overs, with Devon du Plessis bowling tidily to pick up 2 for 15.

Janrich Viljoen and Garnett Tarr then needed only seven overs to see Saint Andrew’s to a comprehensive 10-wicket victory, with Viljoen finishing on an unbeaten 47 and Tarr on 36.

Colts T20

Meanwhile, on the Chapel Field, Saints batted first and posted 232 for 3 in their 20 overs. Corné Viljoen struck 106, Joshua MacKenzie 65 and Reece van Staden 26. St Dunstan’s managed only 36 all out in reply, leaving Saints the winners by 196 runs.

Henré Koekemoer captured 4 for 14 with the ball and was well supported by Naleli Sekhibane, with 2 for 5, and JD Bruwer, who also snared 2 for 5.

On Saturday, Saint Andrew’s won the toss in both matches, so used the opportunities to get in some batting practice.

1st XI 50 overs

The 1st XI, who had scored 424 for 6 earlier in the season against Union High, bettered that total when they tallied 453 for 4. Garnett Tarr top scored, making 127 before retiring. Gerald Coetzee weighed in with 81, Calvin Flanegan contributed 80, Marx de Villiers 56, and Ruan Cronje an undefeated 47.

Saint Dunstan’s crumbled in reply, slipping to only 44 all out. Captain Calvin King was both penetrative and economical in taking 3 for 13 from his 10 overs, while Marx de Villiers showed his all-round ability by adding a haul of 3 for 29 to his fifty, and Franklin Damons snapped up 3 for 0 in only two overs.

Saints won by an astonishing 409 runs. But that lopsided victory was eclipsed by the Colts’ win on the Chapel Field.

Colts 50 overs

They blasted a hard to believe 578 for 4 in their 50 overs, for a run rate of 11.56 per over.

Corné Viljoen followed up his century in Friday’s game with 137 on Saturday. Gerrit Badenhorst also reached three figures, contributing 107, and Nathan van der Nest was also a century-maker, with 102 not out. JD Bruwer smashed an unbeaten 80 and Reece van Staden finished on an undefeated 75.

Overmatched, Saint Dunstan’s mustered just 43 all out in response, leaving Saints the victors by the incredible margin of 535 runs!

Van Staden followed up his strong innings with a five-wicket haul for only 11 runs, while Henré Koekemoer picked up 3 for 31.
