South Africa must adopt policies or programs that bolster constitutional awareness.
This is according to Public and Constitutional Law expert Jonas Sibanyoni. He explained that government must adopt measures and show awareness of the constitution and human rights education. He hoped as the African Union is currently holding its 25th summit in Johannesburg, they can also discuss human rights issues affecting the continent.
Sibanyoni was speaking at the Human Rights Commission colloquium on the launch of the access to justice campaign at University of the Free State in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. He said the Justice Department has established a program that promotes human rights awareness and assisting the most vulnerable to access their rights.
“Before discussing the right of access to justice, it must be noted that the right of access to justice cannot be divorced from the importance of knowledge of constitutional rights. This means that the constitutional literacy is mutually supportive of the right of access to justice,” he said.
