Residents demand action at Ryk Tulbach Street in Bloemfontein

“We have a lot of break-ins here, and there was a murder here two years ago. I am not saying that they are connected, but we just want the municipality to act, whether this is their property or not,” she said. Residents are up in arms and are suspicious of drug-related activity. The people who occupy the bus allegedly make fires in the bus, which she said poses a hazard.

While there, a resident and businessman told the publication that the man who lives in the derelict building is only trying to make an honest living by recycling. He emphasised that he has not seen any drugs or criminal behaviour from the man. He called out to a man named Gert, who came to meet Pretorius.

“Before I cleaned this area last year, in December, you could not even notice the building,” he said when asked to share his story with Pretorius. He is aware of the conditions he chooses to live in but would appreciate any assistance to make a better livelihood as he cannot live back home with his family. He emphasised that he is no threat to the community, but more of a help as he keeps criminals at bay. He often receives contributions from some of the residents, so the petition comes as a surprise to him.

The resident added that he understands the community’s concern for their safety. He admits that it is not a “good look” for the area but Gert being there “is a great help, because the area is safer and cleaner because of his presence”, he said.

Pretorius, who understands the positive impact he may have there, remains concerned for his safety and the concerns from the residents she serves. Bloemfontein Courant has yet to establish Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s plans for the area of concern.

Sainty Molale from Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club also said the petition came as a surprise, as he has been in contact with residents. He said a mechanic has been appointed to work on the bus, which should be removed by the end of the week if all goes well.

“That bus does not really bother them to an extent that they could have a petition. We are still moving our stuff, and we will take the bus. I reside in Bayswater, and that was my former place of employment, so I wouldn’t want anything that would hinder the safety and health of the environment,” he said.
