The Hawks in the Free State are currently on the hunt for the suspects who took part in the cash-in-transit robbery that took place late Thursday.
According to authorities, a cash vehicle en route from Botshabelo to Bloemfontein was rammed by a silver Mercedes-Benz, before a group of armed suspects opened fire. One of the guards was shot and sustained an injury to his right arm.
The suspects reportedly set the Mercedes-Benz alight, stole firearms from the security personnel, and used explosives to access the vehicle’s safe. They fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a white Toyota GD6 and a dark grey Ford Ranger.
Head of Casualties at Busamed Hospital, Dr Ilse Fourie, confirmed that four patients were hospitalised and treated. “I can confirm that several individuals sustained injuries during the incident and were brought to Busamed Bram Fischer Private Hospital for emergency care. Our trauma team treated them promptly, and all patients were stabilised,” she could not confirm if those who received medical care were the security officials or the suspects. “At this stage, we are not in a position to confirm the identities or roles of the individuals who sustained injuries, as that remains part of the investigation.”
Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information is urged to contact Lieutenant Colonel Skota of the Hawks on 079 509 4998 or 051 412 3000. Investigations are ongoing.
