A deeply personal solo exhibition by South African artist Mzie Gojo, Qula Kwedini, will run from 8 May to 16 June at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum.
Rooted in Xhosa tradition, the exhibition draws inspiration from the sacred song of the same name, traditionally sung to mark important events. For Gojo, it evokes memories of his rural Eastern Cape upbringing, symbolising celebration, unity, and the transition to manhood.
Using culturally significant materials like cow dung, Gojo blends ancestral knowledge with contemporary commentary. He connects the song’s symbolism with iKhambi (Zulu herbal remedies), framing art-making as a restorative practice. His bold, intricate works – filled with layered meanings – invite viewers to reflect on cultural memory and social identity.
The phrase “Umntu ngumntu ngabantu” (a person is a person through others) underpins the exhibition, urging reconnection with the past to understand the present.
