Principal hands himself over after assault video surfaces

62-year-old Jimmy Roos school principal Isak Joubert, also known as Sakkie, handed himself over to the police after a video of him allegedly assaulting a learner surfaced earlier this week. Joubert appeared in the Dewetsdorp Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of assault but was released on warning.

Courant reported yesterday that the school principal was accused of hitting a learner a number of times including with a fist while allegedly dragging him out of bed. A case of common assault was opened by EFF members before the principal handed himself over to the police.

“Statements from all parties involved, including the victim and police who attended the scene on the day in question, will be obtained and presented to the Director of Public Prosecution together with all videos captured of the incident,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele.

According to Makhele further investigation has revealed that there was a protest by learners at the school on the day of the incident which led to the principal being attacked.

“Local police were alerted who had to call for reinforcement so as to defuse the situation. Other videos which were captured on the day were submitted to the police,” said the spokesperson.

Joubert is set to reappear in court on the 24 March 2020.
