Pressure on UFS and CUT heading into round 3 of Varsity Football

The pressure is mounting on the University of the Free State (UFS) and the Central University of Technology (CUT) as they head into round three of Varsity Football. After two rounds, neither side has managed to claim a win, leaving both desperate for points.

Last week, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) secured a late winner against the UFS Blues at Shimla Park, handing the Bloemfontein side their first defeat of the competition. UFS created plenty of scoring opportunities but struggled to find the back of the net.

This week, the Blues travel to Pietermaritzburg to face the Durban University of Technology at Harry Gwala Stadium on Thursday at 18:30. Samkelo Nakedi of UFS told Bloemfontein Courant that the upcoming fixture is crucial and requires a new approach.

“Our next fixture is crucial – away from home again – which calls for a different kind of determination and mindset. I believe my teammates and everyone in the camp remain positive,” Nakedi said.

“With five games left, we’re focused on putting in the work needed to secure points and ultimately aim for the championship. Going into Thursday’s game, our focus is on improving our finishing, staying consistent, and doing the right things on the field.”

Meanwhile, CUT will play at home for the first time this season when they take on the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), a consistently tough opponent. In round one, CUT lost 4-1 to Wits in Johannesburg, and last week suffered a 1-0 defeat to NWU-Mahikeng in Mahikeng.
