Police seize drugs during operations in Mangaung Metro

Patrols that form part of Operation Shanela II and conducted by police in Bloemfontein, continue to yield successes in taking drugs off the streets of the Mangaung Metro.

Members of the public order police unit conducted patrols in Bloemspruit when they received information regarding a drug post in Phase 4. “A search was conducted, during which Mandrax tablets and bankies containing Crystal Meth were found and seized,” said Free State police spokesperson Lt Col Thabo Covane.  Police arrested a 38-year-old male and confiscated cash believed to be the proceeds of drug sales.

Two suspects were also arrested on End Street in Moroka Village, Thaba Nchu. The 19- and 28-year-old suspects were found in possession of Crystal Meth and cash suspected to be the proceeds of drug sales.

Police in the Parkweg Precinct’s crime hotspots, including Fichardt Street CBD, Peet Avenue, Central Park Mall, and the Tourism Center, yielded further positive results for the SAPS.

“Seven suspects, between the ages of 22 and 34, were found in possession of Crystal Meth and Mandrax tablets and were immediately arrested,” said the spokesperson. “Police further confiscated 15 boxes containing 120 sachets of contraband spirits and liqueur in Douglas Street and arrested a 52-year-old foreign national for contravening the Free State Gambling and Liquor Act.”

Covane explained that further policing actions were carried out in the Kopanong Police Station area, including Freedom Square, Ipopeng, and Caleb Motshabi Informal Settlement. “Six suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with police seizing Mandrax tablets, Crystal Meth, and dagga,” he said. “Two fines were also issued for selling liquor without being duly registered in terms of the Free State Gambling and Liquor Act.”

More such operations are continuing throughout the metro, said Covane.
