Police end hostage drama at Bfn mall

An hour long hostage drama at an insurance company at Twin City Mall in Heidedal, Bloemfontein was ended at around 17:30 this afternoon by the police’s Tactical Response Team without any fatalities or injuries.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, says 5 employees of the insurance company had been held captive by a disgruntled client, dispelling earlier rumours circulating on social media that there was an armed robbery in progress at the mall.
Makhele said at about 15:45 the Heidedal Police received a destress call from Twin City about an unknown male who locked the manager and his staff of the insurance company in their office demanding to receive his pension pay-outs immediately.
“A police hostage negotiator, the K9 Unit, members of the Public Order Policing as well as emergency medical services were called to the scene. The hostage negotiator attempted to diffuse the situation but with no success, until the Tactical Response Team was summoned to ensure the safety of the victims.”
Makhele said the team arrived at the scene at around 15:30 and managed to take control of the situation.
“They secured the safety of the 5 employees of  the insurance company as well as the suspect’s  4 year old son.”
The suspect was arrested and charged with kidnapping and will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court soon.
