The Mangaung Metro will take one step closer to realising its future goal of becoming home to a Centre for Space and Earth when it launches the dome of the first sub-Saharan digital planetarium today.
The new planetarium is located at the Lamont-Hussey Observatory building on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein. The special imported dome only arrived in the country recently and during a Mayoral walkabout at the venue earlier in the year. Those involved said the assembly would be completed by local experts.
The Planetarium is a collaborative effort between the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, the University of the Free State, the Free State Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and the national Department of Science and Technology.
The planetarium is expected to open its doors to the public later in the year.
