A temporary stay, a sojourn, is captured in the artworks of Petra Schutte whose solo exhibition is underway at Gallery 2 in Johannesburg.
Sojourn, the name of the exhibition, focuses on travelling, but more specifically living somewhere temporarily or visiting someone or somewhere for a short stay. The meaning of the title also questions your own temporary stay on earth.
“I’m fascinated with my surroundings and how nature and man-made buildings co-exist with one another. We tend to overlook the subtitles of both nature and architecture, but being made aware of either one or the other lets you look deeper and discover more than what is seen on a day-to-day basis,” said Schutte.
She creates her own imaginative world of textures, marks, stains, organic markings, used organic objects and technical marks.
Schutte, a Bloemfontein born artist, received a BA Fine Arts degree in 2017 from the University of the Free State. Thereafter she took part in various group exhibitions and received numerous art awards. Her art has also been purchased by Phatshoane Henney Attorneys and personal buyers. Her art can be viewed at Gallery 2 from Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 17:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00.
