Pet products retailer and food brand make history with massive donation

Petshop Science and Montego Pet Nutrition have set a new Guinness World Record for the largest donation of pet food within 24 hours at the Bloemshow.

The publicly supported initiative took place on 1 and 2 May, as 67,200kg of donated pet food was recorded, exceeding the 2023 United States record of 36,750kg. Trevor Paxton, Petshop Science general manager, said when people support initiatives like this, it produces such results. “A record is one thing, but what matters is where this food is going, and the difference it will make.”

Eight Free State-registered animal welfare organisations will receive contributions from the accumulated donations, and shelters from other provinces will receive additional distributions. Montego Pet Nutrition managing director Johan van Jaarsveld said, “This record allowed us to shine a light on the extraordinary dedication of the people who run our animal rescues.”

He added the partnership between them and Petshop Science is something they are proud of, given what they have achieved, and the equal commitment to the continued work going forward. Petshop Science has donated R3.3 million in pet food and supplies to 35 organisations across South Africa in the past financial year. The company has improved the lives of animals in need, reaching 174 stores nationwide since its launch in 2021. Its reach extended to all nine provinces, strengthened by the Sixty60 partnership. Bloemfontein SPCA is one of the beneficiaries.

According to manager Louis van Nieuwenhuizen, this donation will greatly ease one of their expenses, namely providing food for animals in its care. “This allows resources to be redirected toward veterinary care, sterilisation programmes, and facility improvements. It also increases the capacity to take in more animals, knowing that food security is ensured for an extended period.”

He urges the Bloemfontein community to support local shelters. “Supporting your local SPCA goes beyond donations – responsible pet ownership is key. Sterilise your pets, ensure proper nutrition and veterinary care, and consider adoption before buying.”

“Community involvement, whether through volunteering, fostering, or donations, plays a vital role in improving animal welfare and reducing the number of animals in need,” said Van Nieuwenhuizen.
