Oranjesig plagued with crime

Drugs, break-ins, robberies, burning tyres, and so much more. These are examples of the crime the residents in Oranjesig allegedly have to deal with in their neighbourhood.

According to some of the residents – who agreed to speak to Bloemfontein Courant under the condition of anonymity in fear of victimisation – they have been dealing with such issues for years now and with no assistance from the police.

One of the residents went as far as saying that it feels as if nobody cares about them. “We spoke about drugs and crime. I spoke to a lot of people. We are ‘gatvol’ about the crime. We are tired of sitting in meetings, listening to what is said but nothing happens.”

Another resident alleged that some of the neighbours have now started burning cables and tyres at 02:00 in the morning. “Other neighbours and I are choking because of the smoke. Some people and their children have developed serious breathing and lung problems, requiring medical attention,” they said.

Residents of this area are gravely concerned about the future and safety of their children in the area.

“When the school holidays start, my child has to go live with his grandmother because there is no way I can leave him here [referring to her house]. I don’t want my child to be exposed to these kinds of things. Sadly, nothing is being done about it. We have called the police multiple times about drug deals right in front of our homes and nothing is being done about it. We are tired,” said a concerned mother who alleged her neighbours are part of the problem in the area.

The Bloemfontein Courant contacted the Park Road police station to see if they were looking into these allegations, but received no response at the time of publication.
