SABRINA DEAN – North West police have confirmed that a man was gunned down and killed in the informal settlement next to the koppie in Marikana last night.
Police spokesperson Thulani Ngubani confirmed the murder but would not speculate on the motive or whether or not the man is part of the National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM) membership. He says the incident took place between 7 and 8p last night:
“He was on his way to go and visit his girlfriend. As he was about to pick up his girlfriend and she was approaching four men came out and started firing on the car,” he says.
Ngubane says the man then exited the vehicle while the suspects continued firing. “They managed to fire bullets directly at him where about seven bullets hit his body and he died on the scene,” he says.
NUM spokesperson Lesiba Sheshoka confirmed the incident and says the man was a branch leader in the area. He says another NUM member was also shot in the leg and admitted to hospital.
Seshoka could not provide the victim’s name yet as some of his next of kin still have to be informed. He also would not speculate on the motives saying that would form part of the police investigation.
Ngubane meanwhile says the police’s forensic experts have been working on the crime scene since last night.
