Kenya’s newly established legislature visits the Northern Cape Province.
The provincial speaker Kenny Mmoiemang says that they were also on the same situation as Kenya in 1994 and they are happy that the Laikipia Legislaure chose to learn from them. He was speaking at the legislature meeting this morning in Kimberley. Mmoiemang says they will provide information on how their system of lawmaking works.
He says in the next five days they will focus on public education, oversight and critical lessons to be learned from their systems. “Kenya just emerged from elections and in their system of governance, unlike us instead of the legislature they still has cantons. Therefore, they are hardly six months in the office as part of democratising the government,” he says.
Laikipia’s speaker Patrick Mareero says they use the South African governance model. He says the country is the perfect place to learn of service delivery, public participation and connecting with the community.
Mareero says he’s sure they will be leaving with more knowledge of how the legislature operates. “Our legislature has never been there, it is new and it’s been six months. So it’s a new thing for us, it’s a new thing for Kenya. There are still some issues that we are dealing with a country some operational, some practical and others conceptual,” says Mareero.
