The newly appointed national commissioner of correctional services Zacharia Modise said there is a perception that life in prison is a luxury.
He further explained that there is also a large scale of corruption from correctional services officials. Modise said he has his work cut out to erase such perceptions by implementing a culture of no corruption and mounting pride and responsibility in the manner in which correctional services officials do their work. Modise was recently appointed to his position after acting in it for almost a year and stated that hard work paid off.
He noted that there are few challenges that the department was facing and it was his intention to change the department’s negative perceptions. He explained that overcrowding of prisons is one of the challenges.
Modise was born in Seretse near Boshof, a rural town in the west of the Free State.
