Municipal Manager closes offices for vacation

REFILWE MEKOA

Naledi Municipality Manager in Dewertsdorp allegedly closed municipal offices last December to go on vacation.

This is according to the Free State Legislature’s Public Accounts Committee Chairperson Neels van Rooyen. He was reprimanding Naledi’s Municipal Manager, Wilson Lefora during the committee’s meeting in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. Van Rooyen’s statement came after most questions that committee members asked Naledi Municipality’s officials were answered by municipal CFO Thabang Moses.

Van Rooyen expressed his disappointment, saying it seemed Lefora was not in charge of his municipality and wasn’t cooperating.

“I thought the municipal manager was not in charge and not showing leadership skills because he allowed the FCO to answer all the questions. As an accounting officer, it is wrong to do that. He as the accounting officer should answer all these questions and I could see that he was not prepared. If a person wants to be an accounting officer of the municipality they must be in charge of what is happening,” said Neels.

Meanwhile, DA’s Member of Parliament David van Vuuren, highlighted that Naledi Municipality didn’t struggle financially but seemed the problem was with its leadership.
