Municipal employees not paying debts

REFILWE MEKOA

Most of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality employees are not paying their municipal bills.

This is according to Municipal Manager Chris Taetsane. He said they have implemented stop orders to get their money for municipal employees residing at urban areas. Taetsane further explained that it is a challenge to get money from employees residing at rural areas.

Taetsane was speaking at the Free State Legislature’s Public Accounts Committee meeting in Bloemfontein on Wednesday. According to Mayor Vusi Tshabalala, there are 1052 municipal employees owing the municipality money.

“The number of employees owing the municipality is 1052 out of the total amount of 1246 employees, this shows that many employees are not paying their rates and taxes. It is a serious concern but we have taken a stance that we will have to deduct that money from their own salaries to recover and have at least collection of revenue out of them,” he said.

Tshabalala said they are in the process of restructuring the municipality’s indigent register.
