Multiple dose of Varsity Sport this year

LEE KHOTLELE

Bloemfontein – Most of the universities have signed up while others are also expected to join what promises to be a mouth-watering 2014 Intervarsity Sports which kicked off at the fields of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Other universities that have already signed up are the university of Limpopo; Free State (Kovsies); Pretoria (Tuks); Stellenbosch (Maties); North-West University (Pukke); Rhodes University; the University of the Western Cape and Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Entering its second successive year, the challenge is a high-performance competition platform that enables South African universities to compete against one another in six different sporting codes.

These codes are athletics, hockey, football, netball, rugby sevens and beach volleyball. There is a full programme in place and it started with athletics on Friday (21 March) until Monday (28 April) in Port Elizabeth, Potchefstroom, Stellenbosch and Pretoria.

Men’s hockey will take place on 3rd to19th May at University of Wits in Johannesburg, Stellenbosch, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg (UJ). This will be followed by a comprehensive football programme from 21 July to 15 September; netball from 15 September to 20 October, rugby sevens, and beach volleyball from 28 to 30 November.

SA rugby legend Francois Pienaar is the driver behind Varsity Sports, part of Advent Sport Entertainment & Media (Pty) Ltd. (ASEM), said he was confident that the Varsity Sports concept would be a huge step toward achieving this goal by getting people together and giving them a mutual interest.

Varsity Sports has a five-year exclusive broadcast agreement with SuperSport (airing on channel 210 on Monday nights) and will showcase a five-phase seasonal presentation of the various events, including athletics, on Monday evenings at 17:45, – 21 March to 28 April.
