Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring that every South African has access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial background. Speaking at the G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting held in Polokwane, Motsoaledi emphasized that healthcare is a fundamental human right, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy.
He said South Africa will continue to collaborate with global partners such as Norway, one of the countries with an established universal healthcare system, the continued partnership is to strengthen the implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI). The NHI aims to create a more equitable healthcare system that provides access to quality medical services for all citizens.
“We need proper regulatory guidelines, learning from global examples, to ensure that public financing remains central. Health cannot just be a question of who has more money. It is a fundamental human right, and we must defend it from forces that prioritise financial gain and profit over human dignity and survival,” Motsoaledi said.
The minister’s words come as South Africa prepares for the next phase of the NHI rollout, which continues to spark debate across various sectors. Motsoaledi said the government’s priority remains building a healthcare system that upholds fairness, quality, and dignity for every citizen.
