There was a time when the Department of Education in the Free State had money and it was mostly invested on the infrastructure.
This is according to MEC Tate Makgoe. He was speaking after his budget vote speech address yesterday (Tuesday) at the Raadsal in Bloemfontein. Makgoe emphasized that political opposition parties didn’t understand how the department ended up needed more funds.
He said infrastructure needed to be maintained and dismissed the Democratic Alliance’s prediction that education department is heading to serious financial problems.
“The opposition party have always been saying that and what really made us have serious money problems last year was an issue of school books. We took a conscious decision to buy books for everybody including ex-model C schools. Because we realised those schools gave out pupils photocopies and not originals. So we bought books for everyone,” he added.
Makgoe said during the budget speech debate, he is happy that most of the political parties agreed with his speech.
